THE DRUNK IN THE BUSH | ESIBLA

A drunkard in the bush is the story of a drunkard, a great fan of palm wine, in search of his “malafoutier”, in other words the one who prepares his calabashes of palm wine for him. The death of his “malafoutier” is the pretext for adventures which lead the narrator into a bush, populated by magical and often evil beings, in towns as strange as each other. We meet there, for example, a “complete gentleman” who is reduced to a terrifying skull, legless babies who haunt certain cities, a being called “Giving-giving” who takes more than he gives, the dead who walk backwards but also magnificent beings like “Helping Mother” or “Dance” and “Song” who dance or sing in all circumstances. A world where it is possible to sell one's death and to redeem it. A world where death is not an end but the beginning of a journey, strewn with pitfalls. The author creates a gap between this wonderfully dangerous world and the absurd goal of the narrator's quest. The omnipresent danger in no way taints the motivation of the hero who often ends up triumphing in a facetious way. As the stories unfold, Yoruba beliefs and cosmogony emerge. We enter the Yoruba world to see the world through their eyes. A world where naivety hides great depth.
